A beautiful day for a walk in the park.

Sunday March 16, 2014.

Swan Lake Village area,
Markham, Ontario

Spring is almost here! Just a few more days. However if you can't wait there are tropical places you can go to not far from Swan Lake Village. The Metro Toronto Zoo has a number of tropical pavilions. These warm escapes from the cold of winter are full of beautiful tropical plants, birds and animals.

Trumpeter Swan
A friend was recently down at Bluffers Park on the shores of Lake Ontario in the Toronto/Scarborough area.

Swans and Ducks waiting for spring to arrive.
In this one area someone reported counting over 80 swans.
Trumpeter Swans, Mute Swans, Canada Geese and ducks are waiting for spring to arrive before they head north to their summer breeding grounds.
Obviously two of the attractions for the water birds here are the open water for safety and food.

Trumpeter Swans
"Originally native to Ontario, the trumpeter swan disappeared from Eastern Canada early in the 20th century. Restoration efforts were initiated in the early 1980's to reintroduce the trumpeter swan to its former range." Through conservation efforts the Ontario population has grown significantly passing the 1000 mark in 2007.
"Tagging and banding is essential for a successful monitoring program " . You can see the yellow tags, for monitoriing the trumpeter swans in the above pictures.
